What Home Warranty Has To Offer To A Homeowner

You just purchased your dream house along with all the perfect décor that turns your dream house into your dream home. It has been a few months and everything is unpacked and placed in their designated spot within your new home. So you turn your attention to rebuilding your savings account since it was depleted from the biggest and most important purchase of your life. However, within a few months of living in your dream home you experience a quite costly unexpected expense when your heater grows out during the winter.
With a new mortgage payment and a limited amount in savings, you are looking at numerous financial options on how to pay for this unexpected expense. Fortunately, you purchased a home protection plan that will cover this expense as well as any major systems and appliances that may need repair or replacement in your home.

What Does a Home Warranty Include?

Home warranties typically include coverage the following major appliances and systems:
• Central Air Conditioning Systems
• Central Heating Systems
• Humidifiers
• Interior Electrical Systems
• Refrigerators
• Ranges, Ovens, and Cooktops
• Dishwashers
• Built-In Microwaves

• Garbage Disposals
• Washers and Dryers
• Garage Door Openers
• Roof Leaks

When Do You Need A Home Warranty?

Home warranties are offered to all homeowners whether they are new or existing. Typically, home warranty plans are offered to the home-buyer when they are purchasing a new home. However, if the buyer decides not to purchase home warranty insurance simultaneously with their home purchase, then they can secure a home protection plan at a later date. There is not time restricts as to when a homeowner can decide to purchase a warranty plan.

Cost Involved with a Warranty For Your Home

Typically, a home warranty cost a couple hundred dollars, which can be paid in a lump sum amount during the purchase of a new home. This lump sum payment would be collected at the time closing costs are due for their newly purchased home. However, the seller of the home, real estate agent or a family member or friend can purchase home warranties on behalf of a home-buyer. If a home appliance insurance claim is filed then the homeowner may be responsible for paying a service fee or deductible that typically ranges from $50 to $100. Please note, home warranty companies have different contract agreements therefore, fee amounts may vary.

Home Warranty Process

Filing a claim is a very simple process. Prior to filing your claim, review your insurance contract to verify the item that you need to repair or replace is covered under your plan. Once you verify this information, and then will complete the following steps:

  1. Contact your home warranty insurance company to file a claim.
  2. The insurance company will review their home warranty plans to verify that you have a plan that covers the item in question.
  3. The insurance company will schedule an appointment for you with a local contractor.
  4. The contractor will diagnosis the situation and makes a recommendation to repair or replace the item in question.
  5. Repair and replacement will occur.
  6. You will pay a cost in the form of a service fee to the insurance company.
  7. Process is complete.

Within 30 days of signing up with Choice Home Warranty you will receive its coverage for single family homes, newly-built homes, condos, townhouses, and mobile homes.

With Choice you’ll never be limited on how many claims you can make in a year, though there are limits on how much compensation you can get for specific items, such as around $500 for appliances and $1,500 for systems. The plans are also among the most competitively-priced in the industry—$485 per year for the “Basic” plan, and $420 per year for the “Total” plan.

The systems covered include HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning), electricity and plumbing, just to name a few, and you can also receive coverage for big-dollar appliances like your refrigerator, washing machine, and garage door opener. It’s worth noting though that coverage for some of these systems and appliances is also provided if you upgrade to the “Total” plan.

Select Home Warranty provides customers with some of the most extensive coverage of any company in the business, up to as much as $500 for appliances and $2,000 for house systems. These limits are also per item, not for the plan overall, so you get even more mileage out of the plan—though hopefully you won’t need it.

The plans cover all types of homes—not just single-family homes—and with Select you can also add coverage for individual items to your plan, on a sort of a la carte type basis.

The pricing breakdown is quite easy with Select. You have the Bronze plan, which covers just home appliances, and the Gold Plan that covers home systems. If you want both, you upgrade to the Platinum Plan, easy as that. The entry-level Bronze plan should be enough for most people, but at only an extra $70 a year, upgrading to the platinum plan isn’t a huge step to take. You can also receive further discounts if you sign on for additional years.

If there is a drawback about Select, it’s that you’re required to make claims within 3 days of discovering the issue, which could potentially be the source of some headaches if something breaks down.

“When my Garbage disposal finally gave up, Select Home Warranty was there to replace it the very next day. Thanks!”
Matty M.

“I’m lucky to have received a warranty from Select Home Warranty at my closing. The cost to repair my central AC was $60 instead of $1200! Thank you.”
Jeff F.

One of AFCs unique features is its in-house customer service team. This means that each member will have a dedicated account manager and an open line of communication through which they can discuss their plans, their repairs, and any other details regarding their membership.

Another benefit of AFC is its policy toward out-of-network technicians. The company allows its members to choose their own licensed technicians, and provides an admirable workmanship guarantee that lasts the duration of your plan, a feature that far outlasts the average guarantee of 60 days.

As far as the plans themselves, AFC offers 4 distinct plans that provide each user the span of coverage that best suits their needs. The simplest plan is the system plan that covers HVAC, electric, plumbing, and ductwork, while the most advanced is the platinum plan that includes all systems as well as a large host of appliances. In between are intermediate plans that provide some customization options based on members’ homes’ and budgets.

"AFC's follow up on service request is superb! Service requests are expedited in a timely fashion. They will text, email, and call you to ascertain that you are fully satisfied with services to your home."
Bob T.

“The service is excellent and the rates are great!”
